Really should know better.

Summary: Mistletoe mischief! Also, I had just missed the one last year:(

A gloom had come over many of her friends, and it was bringing Fionna down...almost. After all, the weather was changing, and there was something about the way the weather had changed that made Fionna feel happy. If her friends weren't going to be happy, she could at least try for them, right?

And what was the best way to do that but to try to get into a festive mood? Fionna was in the gardens, putting flowers in her hair, her hair combed neatly and flowing a little longer than usual out of her hat. It would have surprised even Cake back home: she had never looked this primped up.

Of course, this would have actually been a good idea to look at Alice's post, but like most alerts, Fionna had missed them and was walking around the gardens, seeing what food she could gather in the treefort later. True, she was really only there half the time, but you never knew what you would need later, right?

"What?"

Genuine surprise from Amamiya. That should have worked! Glancing up at the mistletoe again, she bent back down for round two.

This time, the kiss was deeper, and longer, pressing their lips together with as much passion as she could muster.

Fionna nodded with feigned glumness, and this time the kiss was ten times better, and Fionna returned it with one of her own, by now understanding the rhythm of her girlfriend's kisses. Fionna sometimes teased with a little tongue but they could be plenty intense lip to lip. It was definitely enough to get Fionna edging in closer, letting out a muffled sigh.

When Amamiya's lips hurt and she was running short on breath, she finally pulled back. "Hows that?" she asked. Surely, surely that had to get her moving again.

Fionna was pretty red, but she could see that Amamiya was pretty exhausted. She couldn't help but grin a little.

"That was perfect," she said, moving her legs. "But you don't have to stop, you know."

"Of course I don't have to," Amamiya said with a tight smile. "But this position is a bit awkward, don't you think?"

Fionna sighed, nodding. "It is a little out of the way, huh? But I liked it, even if it forced us. You're a really good kisser."

"Not terribly good for the back, either. And I suspect you may have been faking it for the second kiss, anyway."

Fionna blushed. "H-how could you tell?"

"The fact that you were clearly moving towards me during it was a bit of a tell."

Fionna smiled sheepishly.

"I can't help it. I like fighting and being crazy, but I look at you and i just get really happy. I think you're one of the strongest people I know, and seeing you just makes me smile."

"Fionna, you don't have to explain anything," Amamiya said, reaching out to take her hand. "I get it. And all you had to do was ask."

She smiled. "Yeah well, I'm still sorta hopin' I don't do anything to make you uncomfortable or weirded out! This is probably all new stuff for you!"

"Not at this point," she pointed out. "A simple kiss is pretty routine with us now."

Fionna looked down a little, fidgeting with her hands a moment.

"Um. Yeah, I think so too! I was wonderin' though...do yo ever want to do, like, more stuff than just kiss? I've read a lot of stuff, and you know, peeps around this place talk a lot about that. I wanna know, uh, what you think."

"I..."

Amamiya flushed and turned away, her hands suddenly gripping the edge of her shirt nervously. She'd actually thought about this herself...but in the end she wasn't sure, at all. She'd hoped she wouldn't have to decide for a while, actually.

"I don't know," she said finally. "Do you?"

"Well," Fionna said, looking thoughtful, "I guess it kinda depends. Like, I know you never really did that stuff with anyone, and it kinda goes without saying that anyone that would try that with me would get their butt kicked. But if its you, uh, I'm not gonna do that. I really like you, and I know you'd be careful. So when you're ready, I'll be ready."

She smiled, and, boldly, stroked the girl's hair. "But I mean, are you even comfortable with me doing that with you?"

"I don't...I don't know," she admitted. "It's difficult for me, you know...being intimate, that is..."

"Why?"

It was a simple question, although Fionna knew it wasn't in many other ways too. Amamiya was a complex person who came from a strange world. She hadn't forgotten that, and that was why she never brought up any of that stuff.

"It's...hard to explain. You know I had some...bad experiences back home?" She didn't stop to let Fionna answer. "I suppose I have trouble trusting people because of that. Even people I know care, like you."

"I don't know," Fionna said, after Amamiya finished talking. "At least, I dunno about that stuff that made you not trust people. I'm not sayin' we have to do anything, or even that I wanna. I guess I'm just sayin if you don't because of stuff that happened, then I wanna know what they are, and see if I can make you comfortable around me."

"It's not that I don't trust people so much as...I saw an awful lot of people die, Fionna. It can be...difficult to trust that they will still be there the next day."

Fionna puzzled this a moment, thinking of what might be the best response. In the end, she finally gave the girl a smile.

"You really think I'm gonna go anywhere, Amamiya? You're totes my home, and you've been for awhile."

"No, I don't think you will," she answered. "But...there's a difference between knowing something and believing it. And for me, the second one is a lot harder."

Fionna thought about this a little, because she sort of had to right now, didn't she?

"I dunno if anyone is gonna stay," she said, shrugging. "When they're gone, my friends, I'm sad and I'll miss 'em. But I won't let being sad about that make me forgot how awesome they were, and how they made me some kick butt memories! That was what I said to Kazumi too."

She took the girl's hands. "And you changed me most! If you were going to take me, you know, that next step, I'll take it with you, because you make me care more about that than anyone I ever knew."

If Fionna hadn't taken Amamiya's hands, she would probably be wringing them. So many conflicted feelings...not least of which was a bad feeling that Fionna didn't really get it. But she was out of words to explain.

On the one hand, she wanted it. On the other, she was afraid of it. On the other hand, she really didn't want to disappoint Fionna.

"If...if we go slow...maybe..."
