A gloom had come over many of her friends, and it was bringing Fionna down...almost. After all, the weather was changing, and there was something about the way the weather had changed that made Fionna feel happy. If her friends weren't going to be happy, she could at least try for them, right?

And what was the best way to do that but to try to get into a festive mood? Fionna was in the gardens, putting flowers in her hair, her hair combed neatly and flowing a little longer than usual out of her hat. It would have surprised even Cake back home: she had never looked this primped up.

Of course, this would have actually been a good idea to look at Alice's post, but like most alerts, Fionna had missed them and was walking around the gardens, seeing what food she could gather in the treefort later. True, she was really only there half the time, but you never knew what you would need later, right?

"It's not that I don't trust people so much as...I saw an awful lot of people die, Fionna. It can be...difficult to trust that they will still be there the next day."

[fionna_time]

Fionna puzzled this a moment, thinking of what might be the best response. In the end, she finally gave the girl a smile.

"You really think I'm gonna go anywhere, Amamiya? You're totes my home, and you've been for awhile."

"No, I don't think you will," she answered. "But...there's a difference between knowing something and believing it. And for me, the second one is a lot harder."

Fionna thought about this a little, because she sort of had to right now, didn't she?

"I dunno if anyone is gonna stay," she said, shrugging. "When they're gone, my friends, I'm sad and I'll miss 'em. But I won't let being sad about that make me forgot how awesome they were, and how they made me some kick butt memories! That was what I said to Kazumi too."

She took the girl's hands. "And you changed me most! If you were going to take me, you know, that next step, I'll take it with you, because you make me care more about that than anyone I ever knew."

If Fionna hadn't taken Amamiya's hands, she would probably be wringing them. So many conflicted feelings...not least of which was a bad feeling that Fionna didn't really get it. But she was out of words to explain.

On the one hand, she wanted it. On the other, she was afraid of it. On the other hand, she really didn't want to disappoint Fionna.

"If...if we go slow...maybe..."

[fionna_time]

Fionna smiled. Ok, that was something new, the hand holding, but she saw that Amamiya saw what it was: a way to reassure her that Fionna was always going to be waiting, do whatever she could.

"Of course we can go slow. We can go however you want. Amamiya, you're my gal. I'm not gonna do anything to make you scared, ok?"

She squeezed Fionna's hands to steady them.

"Let's do it," she said. "Tonight, at my place?"

Know that girl who was bursting with confidence, saying all of those affirming things? Well now see her reduced to a blushing ball of nerves who can't stop smiling and fidgeting.

"R-really? You want to?"

"W-well, I don't think I want to go...you know, all the way yet. But we can get started."

[fionna_time]

So she did..but she didn't too? What the hey?

"So if we're not going, uh, all the way, what are we gonna do Amimiya?"

[gentlecuteside]

Instant fluster.

"U-uh, well, I mean, um..."

Rather than explain it in detail, she reaches for a convenient metaphor.

"I-it's like we're on first base in a baseball game now. There's still other bases to reach before we can...ahem...slide into home."

Fionna thought about this. "I dunno man. Cake usually gives me advice on all this dating stuff, but she never said nothin' about what you do with babes at all. So...if we're on first base now, what's second base?"

Apparently she missed the Tier conversation.

Amamiya looked extremely uncomfortable. She hadn't imagined she would be explaining second base to her girlfriend.

"W-well, uh, first is kissing. Then you get...uh...physically intimate...but over the clothes..."

[fionna_time]

"Oh!" Fionna could clearly see that Amamiya was feeling weird, and felt stupid for not knowing what she meant. Fionna had read enough poetry at this time to know what she was talking about, but she never heard it referred to as bases. A base was, well, where you went to hide your treasure and stuff, right?

"Now I get it. I mean, I could kiss you all day, you know that! And your body..." she blushed. "I mean, you're real fit and pretty and strong! I'm totally not gonna have a prob with any of this!"

That was a lie, as she was wondering if Amamiya would think her body was that boombastic.

Amamiya blushed, and looked away. This was the most embarrassing conversation.

"Yes, well...I don't want to go any further than that, at least for now. That's fine, right?"

[fionna_time]

Fionna smiled, putting an arm around Amimiya. It was weird, reassuring someone she knew was wiser than her in a lot of ways, but even she could see Amamiya had trouble with just saying some things as plainly as she did.

"Totally! I dunno if I'm even ready for all that stuff! People here can get to it so quick, you know, and they miss all the really awesome parts. Just, like, laying my head against yours, or just talkin, or training with you until we're all out of breath! It makes all that stuff so much better, I think!"

[gentlecuteside]

Amamiya smiled, and leaned into her girlfriend, laying a head on her shoulder just like she said.

"Well, nobody can say we haven't taken our time."

[fionna_time]

Fionna flushed, smiling to herself and lightly running her hands through the girl's hair.

"Good. Because none of that feels rushed. It's totally perfect. I even...I even picked you some flowers. I don't think I would he=ave ever done that back in Ooo."

Amamiya leaned up quickly and kissed Fionna on the cheek.

"I am nervous about going further, but...kind of excited as well. I'm glad it's with you."

[fionna_time]

Fionna blushed, but grinned all the same. Amamiya was a girl who like things in her own way, but she didn't mind. If anything, it made Fionna care even more.

"I'm nervous too! I mean, looking at your body is one thing, but more...I mean, its really important. I don;t wanna mess it up."

[gentlecuteside]

"I'm sure you won't. We wouldn't be doing this if I wasn't."

[fionna_time]

"I guess I'll have to make real good food and we have to, like, make everything all comfortable and stuff!

[gentlecuteside]

"I don't think you need to go to quite that much trouble," she said, a bit embarrassed at the attention.

[fionna_time]

"Well," Fionna said, looking a little bashful, "it's you. I kinda want everything to be perfect. I want you to know how awesome you make me feel."
